Shannon K. Spellman, M.S.W.

Therapist PhotoShannon K. Spellman served as a master's level therapist in private practice with over 40 years of clinical experience.  She holds a Master's of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Iowa and was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) and a Licensed Independent Substance Abuse Counselor (LISAC) in Arizona until her retirement in 2020.  She also maintained state, national, and international certifications. See a complete list of her previous professional credentials and affiliations at the bottom of this page.

Shannon was highly skilled at creating a therapeutic relationship conducive to change with both adolescents and adults often helping clients to achieve success when they have not benefitted from previous attempts in therapy. Having been trained in a variety of methodogies, she chose techniques to specifically address each client's unique individual therapeutic needs rather than using the same approach for all based on the presenting problem. In this way, clients were treated with respect and dignity and treatment planning allowed for individualized clinical assessment.

She provided individual, couples', family, and group psychotherapy, treating both mental health and substance abuse problems.  Shannon is certified in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Learning and offered adjunct Equine Assisted Psychotherapy for adults, adolescents, families, couples, and groups. Equine Assisted Learning was also available for personal growth or leadership and development. Shannon was also trained in both traditional and invitational interventions and helped families and employers to design individualized intervention packages that had the best possible chance of successful entry into treatment and continuing recovery for addictions and other dangerous behavioral issues.

Specialty areas included treatment for adolescent and adult survivors of incest and sexual abuse, addictions, codependency, and recovery issues, interventions,  challenging adolescents and family systems, posttraumatic stress disorder, adolescent life cycle issues, and family of origin issues. Additional practice areas included anxiety, depression, grief and loss, eating disorders, stress management, marital and couples' issues, personal growth and coaching services.

Seminars and occasional Weekend Intensive Workshops and Retreats were also offered.  In addition to her professional qualifications, Shannon is also highly committed to her own recovery and personal growth.  She gently and appropriately blended together her personal experience and professional skill in a nurturing manner that allowed for clients to safely heal and move forward in their lives.

Shannon also provided consultation, offered presentations, and facilitated training workshops for other professionals on various topics. She utilized a down to earth yet professional style, in both her therapy practice and her training that allowed the participants to feel comfortable and relaxed.
