Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Sometimes equine sessions are especially helpful for depressed people in that horses don't require a person to talk or work hard to interrupt their emotions. With horses, clients are allowed to just be and take with them the tools that surface during their experience.

At Veritas Counseling Center, careful consideration for all of the various factors that affect which actual treatment techniques were chosen, were part of the individualized clinical assessment process for every client. The former therapist, Shannon Spellman, M.S.W., treated both adults and adolescents, teaching clients new coping skills that allow them to interrupt and reduce depressive thoughts and emotions. In addition, as appropriate, clients were helped to resolve any underlying issues that may have led to the development of the depressive symptoms. Individual, family, couples', or group therapy was utilized depending on the individual circumstances. If you are depressed, you can feel better.

When the clinical assessment indicated that a client may need an antidepressant medication in order to be able to interrupt depressive symptoms, the client was referred to an outside prescribing practitioner and treatment services were then coordinated with that provider.

Anyone can suffer from depression. Depressive symptoms are best viewed on a continuum with one end being the typical sadness associated with a bad mood that happens to most people once in awhile, and the other extreme being the death from suicide due to an untreated depression. The actual treatment techniques may vary dependent on where the client is on the continuum, the contributing factors, current life circumstances, strengths, resources, family issues, and the length of the depressive episode.

If you are suicidal, you are strongly encouraged to seek help before you make a permanent decision that can't be changed. The following link, while not affiliated with Veritas Counseling Center in any way, has been found to be especially helpful for depressed and suicidal persons.
