Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Equine sessions can be very useful for helping clients to reduce anxiety. Horses have a way of helping clients work through things when talk therapy and other tools just aren't enough. Clients were invited to join us in the arena.

People suffering from anxiety may experience panic attacks, have fears of being in enclosed places, or have other specific types of phobias such as extreme fears of flying, heights, animals, injections, blood, storms, water, or being a passenger in a vehicle. Additional types of anxiety involve social phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorders, acute or post traumatic stress disorders, or a more general form of excessive anxiety and worry. Typically, the anxiety interferes in the daily routine of the client and may affect sleeping and eating patterns. Often the anxiety is originally triggered by some event in the person's life and can be seen as a maladaptive response to the stress of that event.

At Veritas Counseling Center, LLC therapy was available for adult and adolescent clients with all ranges of anxiety disorders.  Clients were taught new coping skills that allow them to interrupt the anxiety episodes. In addition, whenever appropriate, clients were helped to resolve any underlying issues that may have led to the development of the anxiety so that the symptoms could be further reduced and often eliminated altogether. Various types of treatment techniques were utilized depending on the individual circumstances.

The former therapist at Veritas Counseling Center, Shannon Spellman, M.S.W., is also an author and offered free stress management tips that may be especially helpful for people struggling with anxiety.  Visit www.calmingmeditations.com to learn more.
